GRUB is the program that lets you choose which operating system to start when you boot computer. To change your image, first of all descended Startup Manager, a tool that allows you to configure many aspects of the boot through a simple graphical interface . To install it you can do it from the link above or do it with Synaptic.
Once installed you can open it from System -> Administration -> StartUp-Manager.
steps to add image once opened
1) select the Appearance Tab and click on Manage bootloader themes ...
2) Click on the Add button and select an image. XPM compressed termination. Gz
3) File added by selecting it from

If you want to do a custom image, the background image must be a XPM image format, compressed with gzip, sized 640 × 480 and 16 colors. Here you can see a tutorial how to do it.
